FAME SUNDAY FREE LEGAL CLINIC SERVES COMMUNITY IN NEED

Do you have questions about legal problems and don’t know where to turn? Finding affordable legal advice and trying to navigate through the complicated legal system can be a frustrating and even daunting task. First AME Church of Los Angeles is here to help and is providing Sunday Free Legal Clinics to low income individuals and disadvantaged communities for a variety of legal problems, including consumer, family disputes, welfare and health benefits, immigration and poverty law issues such as landlord/tenant disputes, disability support and family benefits payments, worker’s compensation, trust/will/probate issues, bankruptcy/credit issues, personal injury, criminal and criminal record advice and more.

The Sunday Free Legal Clinic is a partnership between Temple Isaiah, First AME Church, UCLA Law School, and Public Counsel. Since November, 1993, the Clinic has provided free legal services to thousands of clients who could not afford lawyers. Meanwhile, the Clinic is deepening the long-term relationship between Isaiah and FAME.
“This Clinic is truly a multi-cultural operation,” said FAME Pastor John J. Hunter. “At the Clinic, Jews and African-Americans work side by side to provide legal services to a primarily African-American clientele, building relationships between these two communities. It also has imbued hundreds of law students with the pro bono spirit that, we hope, will last a lifetime.”

The Clinic runs every other Sunday from 10 AM to 1:00 PM. The Sunday Free Legal Clinic serves every client who walks through the door regardless of income or type of legal problem. About half of the clients come from First AME Church.
“The Clinic continues FAME’s mission of volunteerism and service in the community, as it runs on volunteer power,” said First Lady Denise Hunter. “Volunteer law students and paralegals interview the clients. Volunteer lawyers decide what advice to give. Many of the volunteers are from Isaiah and FAME, and also from local law schools, particularly UCLA, USC and Loyola.”

The Clinic specializes in self-help advice and tries to help clients help themselves. In other situations, the Clinic provides referrals either to free legal services or to fee-charging attorneys. The Clinic does not go to court for its clients.
