COMMUNITY LEADERS AND FAME CHURCH

SUPPORT “ACHIEVEMENT SUNDAY”

On Sunday, September 26, 2010, the First AME Church of Los Angeles, Pastor John J. Hunter and First Lady Denise Hunter continued the promotion of Education in the community by hosting Dr. Robert Michael Franklin, the tenth president of Morehouse College, who spoke to the congregation and guests about the importance of education in helping our young people to succeed, and to become leaders in the community, the nation and the world. Dr. Franklin was joined by community leaders Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, Mrs. Avis Ridley-Thomas, Assemblyman Mike Davis, and San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, who were also on hand to lend their support.

During the ceremony, a special FAME Church Award went to Keith Parker, Assistant Vice Chancellor, UCLA Government and Community Relations, for his work in building bridges between UCLA and the greater Los Angeles community.

“Achievement Sunday” is just one of the events FAME hosts throughout the year providing essential education information to church members and residents of the community. FAME’s next educational event will be the 2nd Annual FAME College Expo, which will take place at FAME on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 8am-2pm. Campus Representatives from the University of California, California State University, Public and Private Schools will be on had to answer questions and give information on what parents and students need to know about their college options. In addition to Student Discussions, Parent Workshops and Live Entertainment, The 2nd Annual FAME College Expo will feature workshops that address SAT preparation, Financial Management for the College Student, Student Life, Insight and experiences from Parents, Financial Aid and CSU/UC Private Institution Admission Requirements.

As Martinique Belgarde, Director of FAME’s College Prep Ministry stated, “As a counselor, I understand the serious need for the type of information that is presented in this workshop. Many families do not have access to information that is critical for working toward entry to college. Last year, many families participated in the event and I am anticipating an even larger turnout this year.”

“We hope that you will join us at FAME’s 2nd Annual FAME College Expo to find out what you need to know about your college options,” said First Lady Denise Hunter. “We know how crucial a role education plays in giving kids the tools they need to achieve in society and in life, and we welcome all to this free event.”
