FAME Hosts Back Pack Giveaway In Avalon Gardens On October 16, 2010, the FAME Corporations of Los Angeles, the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles and Resident Advisory Council President Priscilla Jacquette welcomed Congresswoman Maxine Waters in an effort to support the community of Avalon Gardens in South Central Los Angeles with school supplies for residents. In this area, like many communities in urban America, test scores are below average, buildings are crumbling and graduation rates are too low. In its effort to continue its mission of giving back to the community it serves and to reach out to the greater Los Angeles Community, FAME sponsored a donation of over 200 backpacks to Avalon Gardens residents, to inspire children there to thrive and succeed. President Advisory Council President Jacquette introduced Congresswoman Waters and First Lady Denise Hunter, who both spoke of the importance of education and of children staying in school. In a small ceremony in front of the Avalon Gardens Community Room, students were able to choose between 5 different colors of backpacks, all filled with necessary and much needed school supplies. Waters is a longtime advocate for the importance of education in schools, and believes that students are our future leaders and we must be committed to providing them the best education possible. This is the second such major donation of backpacks FAME has made to its neighboring communities this year, the largest being the Back to School Giveaway on September 11, 2010 where thousands of backpacks loaded with school supplies were given to congregants and South Central LA residents. “Our children are our future. Education is crucial in getting kids on the right path. We believe that by giving them the tools they need to succeed, we help to instill in them the self confidence and self esteem they need to do well in school and in life,” said Denise Hunter, President and Chief Operating Officer of FAME Corporations of Los Angeles. Congresswoman Waters added, “It’s so important that all the children in the 35th District receive as much encouragement and assistance as we can provide to stay in school and get the best education possible. I was very moved that First Lady Hunter and the membership of FAME wanted to reach out to Avalon Gardens, helping young people beyond the church’s immediate neighborhood.” |
