FAME Celebrates the Life and Legacy
of Reverend Earl Green

Thousands turned out over a three-day period of mourning to say a heartfelt goodbye to Reverend Earl Green, longtime Assistant Pastor of First AME Church of Los Angeles (FAME). Reverend Green passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010 at the age of 76. Bishop T. Larry Kirkland, Presiding Bishop of the Fifth Episcopal District of the AME Church; Bishop H. Hartford Brookins; Reverend Dr. John J. Hunter, Senior Minister of FAME Church; and Reverend Dr. Cecil L. “Chip” Murray presided over the funeral service for Reverend Green held on Monday, May 17, 2010 at FAME Church.

“Earl the Pearl was a beautiful gem, and that’s why so many think so much of him,” was the touching sentiment in the funeral program describing Rev. Green, who was beloved by many South Los Angeles residents for his dedicated service to the community throughout his life.

“We resolve to carry on his love and legacy,” said Rev. Dr. Hunter, who alongside  Rev. Dr. Murray, Rev. Eduardo Vickers, Rev. J. L. Armstrong, Rev. Leonard Jackson and Rev. John E. Cager, III, served as pallbearers and spoke at the service.

The influential hymn, “It is Well with My Soul,” was sung passionately by FAME’s Freedom Mass Choir as part of the moving tribute to Rev. Green. The late minister’s life was highlighted on large display monitors in the church sanctuary, depicting the three decades of  selfless, compassionate, ministerial service given by this influential figure to “every hospital and convalescent home in the county,” as stated by Rev. Dr. Murray who delivered a powerful eulogy about his friend and colleague.

Shortly after the service, Mrs. Lela Green, Rev. Green’s 97-year old mother, Bishops Kirkland and Brookins, Rev. Dr. Hunter, Rev. Dr. Murray and First Lady Denise Hunter released doves in his memory at the Murray Circle. The funeral procession then continued onwards to the Inglewood Park Cemetery where the late minister, who served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955, received full military honors. His flag-draped casket was laid on a horse-drawn carriage as the processional moved to the mausoleum where he was to be entombed. Later that evening, a repast was held at FAME’s Allen House in the room rededicated as the Earl Green Pavilion at a ceremony in 2009.

Warmly known to many as “Uncle Earl,” Rev. Green is remembered as a humble, gentle spirit. For his lifetime of service to the community, he has been acknowledged by the Los Angeles City Council and Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa with a certificate of appreciation.

“If you believe in our Lord Jesus Christ, then we will not die,” said Bishop Kirkland in remembrance of his dear friend Rev. Green. “Earl is living beyond this life and because of the love and promise of our Savior, we will meet again.”

THE ALLEN HOUSE
Reverend Earl Green Pavilion

The Reverend Earl Green has served the congregation of First AME Church
of Los Angeles as Assistant Minister for over 30 years.

For over 50 years, Reverend Earl Green has selflessly dedicated himself and continues to be a tremendous embodiment of Christian service.  At only 8 years old, he began demonstrating this unwavering commitment by visiting the sick and incarcerated, and feeding the hungry.

In appreciation of Reverend Earl Green’s love of God’s people and the boundless shared vision of his family, the Sun Porch and the outdoor Pavilion of the Allen House are dedicated and named in his honor.  This dedication recognizes Reverend Earl Green’s good will and exemplary service to the church and the community that he serves.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Matthew 25: 35-40

For the Congregation,

The Reverend Dr. John Joseph Hunter
Senior Minister
