Pastor John J. Hunter, a distinguished alumnus of Morehouse College, was presented with a special commemorative token of esteem by Dr. Rahmelle C. Thompson, Executive Director of the Dr. John H. Hopps Jr. Defense Research Scholars Program.

Also in attendance at Sunday’s service at First AME Church was Dr. June Gary Hopps, an alumna of Spelman College and former chair of its board of trustees. Dr. Hopps established the Dr. John Hopps Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund in May 2004, following the death of her husband of 41 years. John Hopps, a 1958 Phi Beta Kappa graduate and namesake of Morehouse’s $7-million “Tech Tower,” was well known for his pioneering efforts in the field of science. June Hopps was instrumental in helping to establish the Dr. John H. Hopps Jr. Defense Research Scholars Program – the program was established to increase the number of Morehouse students pursuing graduate degrees in the sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Pastor John J. Hunter described Dr. June Hopps as a woman on a divine mission.

“Her dedication and commitment to education is truly inspiring and serves as a powerful reminder that we can all make a difference in the lives of our young people,” said Pastor John J. Hunter. “We celebrate her leadership and the accomplishments that have been made through the Dr. John H. Hopps Jr. Defense Research Scholars Program.”

Dr. Thompson praised June Hopps for her energetic and enthusiastic involvement in the program.

“She has always been a strong supporter,” Dr. Thompson said, “she’s gone on trips with me to make sure that the students are well-received. She’s supportive of them gaining research opportunities.”

Following the worship service, Pastor John J. Hunter and First Lady Denise Hunter hosted a reception for the Morehouse visitors. The students visited with members of the church and shared their aspirations of becoming the emerging leaders of our nation.

"We travel to different colleges, we get the college experience, but we don't get much of a spiritual aspect during our travels,” said Anthony Saxon a Hopps Scholar. “So we thought it would be a good idea to come to First AME Church of Los Angeles, such a famous church, with a lot of history, we really felt the Holy Spirit here.”

First AME Church of Los Angeles shares Morehouse’s vision of empowering bright minds with educational opportunities. Recently FAME hosted a successful college expo. Pastor John J. Hunter and First Lady Denise Hunter started the FAME College Expo as a way to connect students to the college recruitment process and to college admission representatives. The Hunters are confident that the FAME College Expo will increase college enrollment in minority communities.
