First AME Church of Los Angeles' Free Christmas Giveaway a Success! Community Receives Thousands of Items

Pastor John J. Hunter, First Lady Denise Hunter and the congregation of First AME Church of Los Angeles, served thousands in the community on Saturday, December 12, 2009 at First AME's 15th ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GIVEAWAY. Despite the rain, participants formed a long line at the church to receive free turkeys, groceries, toys and school uniforms. Participants received giveaway items on a first come, first served basis.

"All families should experience the joy of Christmas through the gift of giving, which is why we are so grateful that the Lord has blessed us to serve our community during these difficult economic times," said Pastor John J. Hunter. "We expected the demand was going to be much greater this year because so many people have lost their jobs and or homes. It fills us with joy to meet the needs of our neighbors and share with them the blessings of the season."

"This is my first year coming and without the church's support I would have been without food," said Carl Jackson who lives close to the church. "I suffer from four diseases including diabetes and can't really help myself the way I want to. I'm truly grateful to FAME for doing this, truly grateful." The FAME Christmas Giveaway began 15 years ago after the devastating fires of the 1992 Civil Uprising in South Los Angeles. As a result, many families have come to rely on FAME for assistance in providing for their families, especially during the holiday season.

Last year's Christmas Giveaway served more than 5,000 family members. The FAME Christmas Giveaway remains one of the most celebrated holiday events in the City of Los Angeles.
