Southern California Gathers at the preeminent
First AME Church of Los Angeles to Celebrate The Life and Contributions
of Civil Rights Icon Dr. Dorothy I. Height (1912-2010)

Los Angeles, CA – On Thursday, April 29, 2010, beginning at 6:00 a.m., Southern California community leaders, elected officials and the general public gathered at the historic First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles, for the live simulcast of the “Life Celebration” of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height.

Pastor John J. Hunter and First Lady Denise Hunter joined the nation in mourning the passing of Dr. Dorothy I. Height, Chair and President Emerita, National Council of Negro Women. Dr. Dorothy I. Height, passed away at the age of 98 years on April 20, 2010 after weeks of being in a serious condition. Ms Height, a pioneer of the 1960s movement, had joined historic marches with Martin Luther King Jr. and led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. Ms. Height continued to speak out on racial issues and civil rights even until her 90s.

Speaking after her passing Pastor John J. Hunter said, “We at First AME Church of Los Angeles, mourn the passing of Dr. Dorothy I. Height who leaves a stellar legacy of service and achievement, she helped to open doors of opportunity for all people." For nearly half a century, Dorothy Irene Height has given leadership to the struggle for equality and human rights for all people. Her life exemplifies her passionate commitment for a just society and her vision of a better world.
